Second Semester Concluded at Nursing Dept.

The 2016/2017 second semester’s course plan was successfully accomplished at Nursing Department, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Al-Nasser University. The plan comprised theoretical classes, practical activities, field visits to hospitals, and the final examination.

Spanning 12 weeks, the second semester was given a due time to finish the different levels’ course plan. Sophomore students were instructed in Pediatrics by which they learnt the fundamentals of pediatric nursing including: growth and development, behavioral and cognitive development, the common diseases hindering child’s growth and their symptoms. The course introduced such pediatric diseases as: diarrhea, common respiratory disorders, and genetic diseases. The course’s practical was conducted at Zaid Maternity & Childhood Hospital and the Republican Hospital.

Junior students completed the Internal Surgical Nursing courses. Theoretically, they studied the scientific description of the diseases affecting heart, chest, kidneys, respiratory system, bones, brain and nerves, eyes, skin, nose, ears, and throat in addition to emergency. The practical was conducted at Azal and Republican Hospitals. The students were divided into groups and had their turns at the orthopedic, internal medicine, surgery, etc. departments. They could study the different cases by reading the inpatients’ history records and observing the symptoms, checkups, prescribed medicals, nursing care necessary for each case, and nurses’ duties during a surgery. By doing that, the students could practice the nursing skills they studied in the theoretical and practical classes.

Senior students completed the theoretical and practical classes of Public Health Nursing and Nursing Management. Their study of the above subjects was achieved through a number of activities including a field visit to Olufi Health Centre at El-Qa’a area where the students acquainted themselves with the processes of vaccination, pediatrics, family planning, obstetrics, and other health care services.

As part of the Public Health Nursing syllabi, the students conducted the health education activity in El-Qemi’ah School at El-Sunaynah area. Lectures were given to raise the people’s awareness over fatal and diarrhea diseases, hygiene, first aid, and treatment of various cases.

Meanwhile, the students conducted a visit to the Center of Prostheses & Natural Therapy – Sana’a. The visit gave the students an idea about the Center’s mechanism by which the patients receive treatment and psychological support towards a total rehabilitation. They, moreover, got introduced to the Center’s products including prostheses.

As for Nursing Management subject, the theoretical classes introduced the students to the fundamentals of management in general and nursing management in particular, the hospital’s administrative structure, how nursing services are run, shift timetables, dealing with problems, and the assessment of the nursing cadre.

Azal Hospital was chosen for practical where the students learnt about the arrangements related to in-patients’ records from admission up to discharge. They also got an idea about how to carry out doctor’s directions, make checkups, and arrange visits. Furthermore, they learnt about the methods of sterilization, changing in-patients’ dress, and serving them the appropriate food.

Dr. Abdurraqeeb El-Hanani (Head of Nursing Dept.), pointed out that the abundant curriculum taught in the department, using English as the language of instruction, and the University’s deep interest in field training all contributed to the students’ excellence. According to him, some senior students have already been recruited by the institutions where they received training due to the competent skills they shew.

Mr. Ahmed Mahoub (a superintendent), confirmed the FMS’ keen interest in practical learning which gets implemented through the activity and visit programs so as to enrich the students’ professional skills.

The second semester culminated at Nursing Department with the final examination. Whereas the theoretical exams were conducted at FMS, the practical ones took place at the respective hospitals under the supervision of the subject instructors as follows: Pediatric Nursing by Dr. Yaseen El-Jehmi; Internal Surgical Nursing by Mohammed El-Oqmur; Public Health Nursing by Dr. Osamah Mohammed; and Nursing Management by Dr. Noor-el-huda Mohsin.
