University Hosts Seminar on Virus Epidemics

A seminar entitled “Virus Epidemics:  Spread and Control Means” has been organized by Al-Nasser University in collaboration with the Medical Charity Association. Participants included:  Dr. Ahmed Shamsan Almoqri, Consultant Pediatrician and Head of Yemeni  Thalassemia Patient Society,  Dr. Abdulmalik Alzubairy, Secretary -General of the Yemeni Medical Association and Chairman of Yemeni Pharmacists Society, Dr. Abdulhakim Alkuhlani,  Director of Disease Control and Epidemic Surveillance Department  at Ministry of Health,  Dr. Ahmed Saif Muharram,  Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prof.  Saeed Alghalibi, the University Chancellor,  and Dr. Abdulkarim Alzomor,  Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in addition to a number of health secretariat executives , academicians, and interested scholars .

Dr. Nasser Alkadah, Chairman of Public Health Department stated, “Today we have conducted this seminar in partnership with Yemen Medical Association the act that confirms our deep belief in the importance of the mutual cooperation to aid community.” “We have worked,” he maintained, “and are still working with all partners towards improving humanitarian and communal services. Public health was introduced as a subject prescribed for all departments. We have coordinated with the Capital’s Secretariat and the Health Office to conduct an all-over-Yemen survey to identify the major health problems and develop the appropriate solutions. The University has also sponsored many epidemiological studies.
A number of vaccination campaigns against Hepatitis and Polio were conducted by the University in addition to other health care services provided to University students, employees, their families as well as the community of Sana’a.

Dr. Nasser demanded a governmental establishment of an emergency center to monitor the occurrence of any new cases. He also called for unifying efforts and collective work with the private sector and all citizens in order to fortify the Yemenis against these deadly viruses.
Dr. Abdulmalik Alzubairy, the Secretary -General of Yemen Medical Association, in turn, thanked  Al-Nasser University for its efforts towards a genuine partnership pointing to the importance of this symposium  as it establishes for improving the nation’s health standards.
 He stressed the keenness of the Medical Association on a permanent partnership which provides a safe way for Yemen to get rid of the epidemic diseases. He added, “Establishing this partnership with Al-Nasser University came to reinforce the efforts and to draw attention to the importance of health consciousness.”

 Dr. Shamsan talked about the vectors of epidemiological viruses, illustrating his discussion with highlighting their types and the methods of controlling their spread through enhancing public consciousness and providing appropriate vaccines
He pointed out that the viral infection can be caused by sneezing as well as the enclosed spaces where the possibility of infection increases. He highlighted the fact that the people suffering from chronic diseases are most prone to viruses because of the deficiency in their immunity systems. He concluded with an emphasis on the importance of coordinating and intensifying efforts to curb the spread of viruses.

For his part, Dr. Abdulhakim Alkuhlani casted the light on the significance of a cross-country virus surveillance to monitor new infections and develop appropriate solutions. He added that the Ministry of Public Health had trained biochemists in collaboration with Atlanta Center and World Health Organization. After getting the required training, the biochemists were sent to the five major provinces so that they can monitor and control viruses.
“We have,” he maintained, “an office of coordination with the World Health Organization that offers training to the teams which would provide the WHO with up-to-date reports.

Alkuhlani cited Lahj Health Office as a typical example where Dengue Fever could be reduced due to raising people’s awareness, training school students and finding the virus vaccines.
“Swine flu vaccines,” he continued, “have been circulated along with vaccines for the people with chronic diseases.”
Alkuhlani assured the audience that the new virus called Coronavirus is under the Ministry’s complete observation and any case will be soon reported.
 Dr. Ahmed Al-Baadani,  Director of Immunization Dept.-Sana’a, confirmed that immunization targets  four deadly viral diseases. The program has given vaccines against “Polio, Hepatitis including (B), and Measles virus.  Shortly, new vaccines will be introduced against German Measles (Rubella)   as well as Rotavirus which causes deadly diarrhea.
He stated out, ” For the immunization program to work out, there must be a genuine partnership with all citizens and private sectors whereas local and international organizations are expected to provide the necessary support.”
He thanked Al-Nasser University for the leading part it plays to enhance the public health standards.
